Racing Towards The Green Future: Volkswagen Concept BlueSport

A better future always start with a great vision. A vision that address the needs of the present and leads us towards the future. This is what the Volkswagen Concept BlueSport appears to be: an innovative sports car concept that gives a lot in fuel economy and performance without losing the thrill of the traditional sports car.

Presented in the last Detroit 2009 Car Show, the BlueSport presents a balanced solution to the need for fuel economy, reduced carbon emissions and a roadster that speeds up on the road. It offers a 42 mpg consumption and 50 mpg on the highway; the least amount that any sports car has so far. About emissions, it rates 113g/km of CO2; effectively answering the call for low-emission vehicles. About power, it has a 2.0 turbodiesel engine with an output of 180 bhp and 258 lb/ft of torque. About speed, it posts a top speed of 140 mph and can go 0-60 in 6.2 seconds; not bad for a sports car that is sipping fuel like it’s on its last water canteen in the middle of the Sahara desert.

For the drivetrain, it has a six-speed, dual clutch transmission—giving you a wide range of speeds and an effcient power transfer to the wheels. This is another feature that contributes to the high fuel efficiency of the BlueSport.

One neat feature of the BlueSport is how it fares on the city streets. Once you stop on a red light, the car automically kills the engine. And when the light goes green, just a slight tap on the gas pedal and you’re on your way again. Talk about being stingy (or efficient) in fuel consumption.

Ride quality is something you wouldn’t have complaints about either. With a 45/55 front-rear weight distribution ratio, you have balanced ride that can wind through even sharp corners without a hitch. For handling, it has independent MacPherson struts and a multilink suspension system for the rear axle.

The interiors are not too shabby as well. Furnished with leather, bucket seats and a touch-screen control panel, style and comfort was not overlooked. The LCD panel makes it easy to control most of the car’s devices, leather for a touch of luxury, and adjustable seats that add to comfort—the BlueSport does well in its interior design.

For the exteriors and the style of the BlueSport itself, just look at it and be amazed. Featuring the same design principles as those used on the Golf and Scirocco, a small grille, smooth horizontal lines that give a broader and more aggressive look to the BlueSport. When seen from the sides, the 19-inch wheels are a delight to see, and so are the lines that extend towards the bumper.

Now all we need is to have this concept turn into reality.  As we said, it requires vision to change the world. But visions also require the dedication and commitment to make them a reality. All we have to do now is have faith on Volkswagen and have them give us the BlueSport available at retailers.
