The closest that we can think of is riding a super-motorbike on four wheels. The joy of riding a bike is the open-air feel, and this is what the Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss can give you.
The car debuted in the 2009 Detroit Auto Show. The company plans to release about 75 units until December, and it will be the herald of the end of the partnership between Mercedes and McLaren.
This car is a tribute to Stirling Moss, the winner of 1955 Mille Miglia, an endurance race spanning 1597 kilometers on an open road. What made the legend is that Moss drove through the whole race with just a helmet and goggles, and sped through the race and finished it under 11 hours. So put a winning racer, an open-air cockpit, decades later and what you have is the Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss.
But more about the car itself: it can go 62 mph in 3.5 secs, and has a max speed of 217 mph. Pretty neat for a super car. The main difference of this car is that it has no roof and windshields. So you get everything the environment has to offer, from the full force of the wind, to the dust and debris hitting your face while going at 200. It truly gives you an in-your-face racing experience.
About the exteriors, it is made from a mix of carbon fiber and aluminum with a silver finish. With a car design called “Silver Arrow”, you would get a first-hand experience of how a silver arrow feels like while in flight. It also features several similarities to the Mercedes Benz 300SLR, the car that Moss drove during his win. It has dual exhaust pipes that shows out through the body, raised side skirts and air scoops behind the driver and passenger. The headlights are also designed to resemble the 300.
About the powerplant, it has a 5.4 L V8 engine that can give out 650 HP in total.
If you’re about to get yourself one, you better hurry. As mentioned above, there are about 75 units in the planning. Time and limited production are not the only problems, you also have to check the price tag. Priced at about $1 million or 750,000 Euros, you have to have the cash to get one. Not that we’re saying you don’t have it, but most of us just have to content ourselves dreaming about having one.
So if you want to have a real, actual and an in-your-face experience of speeding at over 150-200 mph, then you have to try the Mercedes-Benz SLR Stirling Moss.
